World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats. Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount. Item Level The value of an item's stats base increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly dependent on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the sheer number of perks that must be changed in order to upgrade an item. It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). Players can see their average item level in their character sheet. Using the item level can help players evaluate the power of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an excellent indicator of an item's quality and the amount of damage it's capable of causing. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller is possible using the level of the item. On PC, you are able to view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat. There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated by formulas that determine how valuable the stats of an item really are. It takes into account the fact that various perks have different value and that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item. This isn't the only factor that influences the value of an item. The level of the area where the item was dropped can alter its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher value. Item Stats Item stats are a big component of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stat mods on weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's level. Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. An item that is white or grey for instance, can only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs. item upgrading can also be used to change an item's stats. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all sizes and shapes. The affixes can be used to provide items with extra damage, special abilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs) or to make them unique by adding a name. At present, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by the arrows that circle. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items, which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as other options for rerolling. In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the specified range, unless it's an item that is unique or a God roll from a boss in a raid. Another thing that could be changed by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to boost. Like the base equipment, it will have to be done per item and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats at once. Item Luck A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players a chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than later ones because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains. In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each item level. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing. Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned by using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck, or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140. Moreover there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased at the store or crafted using the right ingredients. Item Failure Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful. When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased by so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%. The luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases this chance by five percent. The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
